How it works

Set the plan, then stop touching it.

Recurring should be a setup task, not a daily one. Once a plan is configured, CoreGateway handles charges, retries, expired cards, and customer notifications - until you actively change something.

1

Define the plan

Amount, frequency (daily, weekly, monthly, annual, or custom), start date, trial period, end condition. Save it once.

2

Enroll the customer

Capture the initial card via the Hosted Page, Virtual Terminal, or API. Card lands in the vault, plan attaches, first charge fires (or schedules).

3

Let it run

Renewals charge automatically. Soft declines retry on a smart schedule. Expired cards refresh through Account Updater. Failed payments are surfaced in the dashboard and via the API so your team can follow up.

What it does

The decline-prevention stack.

Most lost subscription revenue is involuntary - expired cards, soft declines, customers who forgot to update billing. We attack each one.

Account Updater

When a card expires or gets replaced, CoreGateway refreshes it through the Visa/Mastercard networks. No customer outreach needed. - many gateways charge extra.

Smart retry logic

Soft declines (insufficient funds, generic decline) retry on a schedule tuned per card brand and decline reason. Hard declines don't retry - they surface in the dashboard for your team to follow up.

Pause & resume

Pause any subscription indefinitely or for a set window. The vault stays warm, and the plan resumes automatically on the date you set.

Flexible scheduling

Daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual, or custom intervals. Free trial periods. Skip-a-month support. End conditions by count or by date.

Pro-ration & upgrades

Mid-cycle plan changes pro-rate automatically. Move a customer from Starter to Pro on the 14th, only the difference for the remaining days gets charged.

Pairs with the vault

Every recurring customer's card lives in the PCI-tokenized Customer Vault. Renewals never touch raw card data and never re-enter your PCI scope.

Built for

Any business that bills the same customer twice.

If you charge customers on a schedule, the math probably justifies switching gateways.

SaaS & software

Monthly and annual plans with smart retries and pro-rated upgrades.

Membership orgs

Gyms, clubs, associations - dues, renewals, family plans, complimentary trials.

Subscription boxes & commerce

Coffee-of-the-month, meal kits, ecom replenishment. Pause, skip, swap variants.

Service retainers

Agency retainers, managed-service plans, monthly maintenance contracts.

Payment plans

Tuition, large invoices, layaway. Split a one-time amount into N scheduled charges.

Nonprofits & donors

Monthly giving programs with donor-facing pause/cancel and the Account Updater silently keeping cards alive.

Questions

Recurring & Subscriptions FAQ.

How much does the Account Updater cost?
Nothing extra. The Account Updater is part of the standard CoreGateway platform. Many competing gateways charge an add-on monthly fee or per-update fee for this feature - we don't.
What schedules are supported?
Daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, annual, or fully custom intervals. Free trial periods, end-by-date or end-by-count, skip-a-month, and pause-and-resume are all supported.
How are customer changes (card updates, plan changes, cancellations) handled?
Your team manages subscription changes from the CoreGateway dashboard. When a customer needs to update their card, switch plans, skip a cycle, or cancel, they email or call your support and you make the change from the back end. For platforms that need self-service, you can build that experience against the REST API.
What happens when a renewal fails?
First, soft declines retry on a schedule tuned by card brand and decline reason. Second, the Account Updater checks for a refreshed card. If the renewal still fails, your team is alerted in the dashboard and via the API so you can pause access, downgrade the plan, or contact the customer.
Can I prorate plan changes?
Yes. Mid-cycle plan changes automatically calculate the prorated difference and either charge or credit on the spot. You can also choose to apply changes at next renewal.
Do you support pause-and-resume?
Yes. Pause a subscription indefinitely or for a set window. While paused, no charges fire, the vault stays warm, and the plan resumes on the date you set.
